Geofoam Scores a Hole-In-One

At Jack Nicklaus’ Country Club of the South in Georgia, a major obstacle awaited just beyond the 18th green. Engineer Clinton Rex and supervisor Rusty Giles faced a dilemma that had nothing to do with the game played on the gorgeous, sprawling championship course. A $500,000 renovation was going on and they needed a solution for a 2,760 square foot open-air terrace that was to be built on a hill overlooking the 18th hole. Rex, of Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates, along with the project architects from Rule Joy Trammel + Rubio knew they needed a solution that would prevent downward pressure on the slope which would be carved out and filled in to create a safe, stable foundation for the large terrace. Another factor was the inaccessibility of the location. They didn’t want to tear up the beautiful landscaping surrounding the clubhouse but it didn’t allow sufficient room for trucks hauling dirt.

The answer? EPS Geofoam.

“Geofoam fill gave us the strength we needed and eliminated the lateral load on the downslope,” Rex said. “Using lightweight geofoam blocks made installation much easier and the landscape remained unscathed.”¹

Geofoam can also be treated with a termite resistant additive, although not proven to be necessary since expanded polystyrene foam is not considered a food source.

Not only did Geofoam provide an ideal solution for these issues, it was also beneficial in meeting an accelerated construction schedule. The installation took less than two weeks. Weighing in at 1 to 3 pounds per cubic foot (1/50 the weight of soil fill) while retaining a high compressive strength made the installation “easy and fast,” according to Rex.

These attributes are the major reasons why Geofoam is becoming popular in numerous projects around the world. From landfill and highway embankments to landscaping to stadium seating to swimming pools and green roofs, this multifaceted EPS product is proving to be a solution for many applications.

Thanks to Geofoam and the team directing this project, the guests and golfers at The Country Club of the South can lounge on their new terrace, socialize around the fire pit and simply enjoy the captivating view.
