Hammer & Hand Name EPS “Super-Insulation”

We here at ICA have been following projects by Hammer & Hand, a builder located in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. Throughout their construction process, they document and educate viewers about their building practices and their commitment “to build to last, with the most fundamental definition of sustainability.” Their passion for their projects is unmistakably conveyed in their blogs, videos and photographs.

“Hammer & Hand works differently than other builders. The product is key. But a great product alone doesn’t cut it.” That is true, but H & H are great builders. Their portfolio and testimonials are very impressive. The commitment to be the best of the best is proven in their achievements of earning the highest Minergie-P-ECO, Passive House and LEED certifications in many of their projects.

Staying true to their commitment to sustainable building, H & H selects high quality products that help them achieve their construction goals and align with their own personal building philosophy and standards. According to H & H’s blogs, the product they turn to to “super-insulate” their homes is expanded polystyrene (EPS). Utilizing EPS in the foundation is the first step in creating the homes’ thermal envelope.

Throughout their website, Hammer & Hand shares a wealth of information from their home building experiences. The videos below are narrative of the Karuna House and how EPS Geofoam and EPS insulation were used. We share their story as we continue to work on our goal to serve as a resource of information for the uses and properties of EPS, the Extraordinary Product Solution.

If you are a contractor working with EPS, we would love to share your story on our blog. Please contact us!
