Perimeter Insulation

Application and Use of Rigid Foam Insulation for Perimeter Insulation Projects

When it comes to securing your perimeter in a construction project you want only the best materials. Finding the right material that is versatile, efficient and affordable can make a big impact on the overall success of the project.

Now more than ever, construction crews, builders and the like are turning to rigid foam insulation as their go-to material for their below grade perimeter projects including exterior foundation walls, the under slab foundations and yes, even the finished ceilings with melt away ceiling tiles – but let’s stick with the perimeter application uses for now.

Why is EPS foam gaining traction for below grade applications for perimeter insulation?

Perimeter InsulationThe biggest challenges builders are faced with in regards to below grade insulation include overcoming energy loss, reducing moisture absorption and increasing thermal performance. As a closed-cell, rigid polystyrene foam, EPS (expanded polystyrene) is already known for its strength, stability, low moisture absorption rate and high R-value with long-term performance. EPS does not decay over time nor supports the growth of bacteria. It retains its physical properties during freeze-thaw cycles and its compressive strength (which can vary based on density) will protect your foundation from backfill and load damage. Unlike extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation, our ICA-LITE EPS does not contain any colored dyes that can leach into the environment. EPS is composed of organic elements – carbon, hydrogen and oxygen – and does not contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFS) which are greenhouse gases found in XPS.

EPS enhances the waterproofing product applied, can add LEED points to your construction projects and adds overall insulation value which reduces heating and cooling costs in the long run – all at cost savings compared to other mediums.
